I’m stoked to announce that the Lomax Project album was nominated for a 2016 Juno Award for “Traditional Album of the Year.” Huge and heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped create and support the project—especially all you Kickstarter backers! We’ll be back on the road in March, zigzagging the continent with tour dates in New York, Madison, Northampton, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, and Edmonton.
I had the great honour of teaching at the Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop at DePauw University. The faculty included Yo-Yo Ma, Sarah Jarosz (American folk), Sandeep Das (Indian tabla), Kaoru Watanabe (Japanese flutes), Hadi Eldebek (Arabic oud), Shane Shanahan (world percussion), Balla Kouyate (Malian balafon), Edward Perez (Afro-Latin bass), Hanneke Cassel (Scottish fiddle), and Mike Block (multi-style strings). With 85 participants from around the world, we spent a week making music, making friends, reaching across cultures, and celebrating diversity. You can read an in-depth essay about the workshop and check out some great photos here.
The Lomax Project recording has been out a month and getting rave reviews. Highlights below. You can download the album on Bandcamp and iTunes or order the CD from Borealis Records and Amazon. The recording features 20 songs, 15 musicians, and a deluxe 60-page booklet with archival photos and detailed song notes. Have a look at our upcoming tour dates and get your tickets for a show nearby. This is still very much a grassroots effort and your support of this music and your help speading the word makes a tangible and much appreciated difference.
“An essential album.”
“A truly inventive spin on some very old tunes.”
“A transatlantic session with blood, guts and grit.”
“An album of beautiful, intriguing, thoughtful music coming from a collaboration of outstanding musicians who apply their talents together. It’s an album with a beginning, a middle, and an end… asking us, as listeners, to immerse ourselves in the idea of it all. It rewards that attention as much as it captures it, leading us to the music, rather than pushing us to it.”
“What results is a marvelous expression of Stone’s collaboratory distillation of the folk process.”
“One of the most compelling and rich roots music recordings of recent years.”
Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project will be out March 3rd on Borealis Records. Musicians include Grammy-winning singer Tim O’Brien, Bruce Molksy, Margaret Glaspy, Moira Smiley, Brittany Haas, Julian Lage, Eli West, Mollie O’Brien, and more. Here’s a sneak preview of the first track, “Lazy John.”
Oh my goodness. We did it! All of us, together. 500 people backed the Kickstarter. More than I ever imagined. I feel incredibly moved by your outpouring of support, enthusiasm and belief in this project.
I look forward to sharing the record-making process with you and will be in touch soon with news, updates and sneak previews. In the meantime, I’m going to unplug for a little while, take my kids to the park, have a nap, and savour and celebrate this incredible thing we did. Hope you do too!
With Immense Gratitude,
I just launched my first-ever Kickstarter campaign to record a new album with Tim O’Brien, Bruce Molsky, Brittany Haas, Moira Smiley, Margaret Glaspy, Eli West, Greg Garrison, Julian Lage, and more.
